Posted 12:09 p.m. Mon. Aug. 31 - "Intersections," from illustrator Sam Washburn, is a new series in the Beacon. Each month, Sam will present an image of a neighborhood or an activity that is special to St. Louis. In his drawings, Sam hopes to distill a community's personality and character -- and make us smile in recognition. This month, it's the eclectic, energetic ethnic melting pot of South Grand.   • Neighborhoods
    • A polo match benefiting Therapeutic Horsemanship will be at 4 p.m. Sept. 12 (gates open at 3 p.m.) $25/car at McGehee Polo Field Spirit Valley Farms, 17879 Wild Horse Creek Road. (www.thstl.org or 636-332-4940 to reserve)

    • Golden Dragon Acrobats – a troupe that mixes Chinese acrobatics and theatrical techniques – will bring its production Cirque d’Or to the Touhill Performing Arts Center at 3 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.  26.

    • Alice S. Handelman, president of The Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis,has been honored as a 25 year member of National Federation of Press Women.The recognition was presented in Idaho Falls, Idaho, at the annual nationalcommunications conference of NFPW. Handelman was community relations director at Jewish Center for Aged for 18 years.

    • Come to the Missouri Botanical Garden from 9 am. to 5 p,m. the Best of Missouri Market where you can find more than 120 artisans from throughout the state.

  • Visual Arts
    • Coming to MOCRA on Sept. 13 will be the work of Michael Byron, a professor of painting at Washington University. Opening reception Sept. 13, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Exhibit will run through Dec. 13.

    • Sculpture garden earns high marks. Will the garden draw people to downtown and entice them to stay? Whether or not it does that much, Citygarden stands on its own as a positive addition. | New York Times

    • Bruno David Gallery will present Leslie Laskey’s most recent works in an exhibit titled Tango from Sept. 11 to Oct. 24. For more information go to www.brunodavidgallery.com .

    • Come to the Atrium Gallery from 6-9 p.m. on July 10 for the opening of “Small.” The show, which features small works by several artists, runs until Sept. 6. The Salon level, however, will feature larger works.
