So fantastic to hear the experiences and struggles of our community – I am in awe of such strong women and hold them in high esteem – we need to keep our history alive – We are proud to be called “Feminist”! Thank you to all who attended my Feminist Voices panel last Monday – it was recorded and so I’ll put the audio up as soon as I am able. We had a great discussion, great energy and great connection – here are the bios of the women I was honored to have as panelists.
Joan M. Burger was born and raised in Chicago. She graduated from Loyola University in Chicago (B.S. 1966) and St. Louis University (J.D. 1976 cum laude).
She served as Legal Officer for the St. Louis Juvenile Court and as Assistant Circuit Attorney for the City of St. Louis, then was in private practice from 1980-1994; Hearing officer for the St. Louis Board of Police Commissioners 1880-1994.
Her professional organizations include: Past president of the Women Lawyers Association of St. Louis; Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, National Association of Women Judges; Women Lawyers Association, and the Missosuri Bar Association.
Her community activities include: Member of Board of Directors, Monsanto YMCA for ten years; Board of Directors of the National Association of Women Business Owners, Board of Directors of St. Louis Forum; United Way Admissions Committee and Venture Grant Committee.
She was appointed a circuit judge in November1994 and she served as a circuit judge in the city of St. Louis from 1995 until 2008. She was the presiding judge of the St Louis Drug Court for two years.
She currently is a mediator and arbitrator for US Arbitration and Mediation-Midwest. In 2011, Governor Nixon appointed her Chairman of the St Louis Board of Elections, where she continues to serve as Chairman.
Jeannette P. Ward was Bruce Masterton’s first doctoral student and under his mentorship received her Ph.D. in Physiological Psychology from Vanderbilt University in 1969.She assumed a faculty position in Memphis, TN, and retired as Professor of Psychology from The University of Memphis (formerly Memphis State University) in December 2000.
During that time she supervised the research of many graduate and undergraduate students and published with them over 100 research articles on the topics of the evolution of vision; cross-modal transfer; comparative learning, perception, and sensory processes; primate behavior; and laterality.She has edited two books, contributed book chapters and book reviews, and reviewed for many journals and granting agencies.
In 1985, she established and developed a unique breeding colony of Garnett’s bushbabies (Otolemur garnettii) now housed in the Prosimian Behavioral Study Center at Jackson State University.She is Past-President of the International Society for Comparative Psychology.

Originally from Cincinnati, I hold a BFA in Technical Theatre from Northern Kentucky University, an MA in Theatre from Kent State University and an MFA in Costume Design from Illinois State University.
I have worked in the Costume Shop Supervisor/Head Costumer for Live Shows at Cedar Point Amusement Park, Scenic and Lighting Technician at the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Stitcher/Wardrobe Crew at The Santa Fe Opera, Wardrobe Supervisor at Opera Theatre of St. Louis and the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. Costume Crafts Artisan/Dyer-Painter at The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, The Indiana Repertory Theatre, The Santa Fe Stage Company, The Old Globe Theatre, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and Opera Theatre of St. Louis. I have been an event producer and outside sales rep for Technical Productions, Inc.
About 14 years ago I began taking calls through the union hall and have worked as a teleprompter operator, lighting technician and followspot operator as well as a wireless mic tech. I work in venues all over St. Louis including the Fox Theatre, Peabody, Scottrade, Family Arena, back yards, parks and the Muny. I have loaded in and worked rock concerts, business meeting, Broadway tour shows, conventions, auto shows, corporate events, debutante parties and weddings.
