Residents Warned of Scammers Impersonating US Census Workers
By Cara | September 23, 2009
Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce’s Fraud Prevention Taskforce has issued a new warning of scammers posing as employees of the U.S. Census Bureau attempting to obtain citizens’ personal information.
Asking for a homeowner’s basic financial information, such as salary range, is normal. However, no genuine Census worker will ask for sensitive information like a Social Security number or bank or credit card numbers.
Legitimate U.S. Census workers are easily identified because they must carry:
- a badge and identification card
- a handheld device similar to those used by UPS or Fed-Ex personnel
- a Census Bureau canvas bag
- confidentiality notices
Homeowners are advised to request a worker’s identification and badge before responding to questions or allowing him or her to enter the home.
